After many delays, the "Food Security for Affected Families" project finally launched. Last week, the Ministry of the Interior announced the victory of the Pitchon Lev and Eshel Jerusalem organizations in the distribution of food vouchers.

As previously reported by Shemesh Online, the Shufersal chain initially won the tender, but following a petition by the Pitchon Lev Association the court disqualified Shufersal's victory.

According to the Ministry of the Interior, Pitchon Lev will be responsible for the distribution in the Tel Aviv, Haifa and northern districts; Eshel Jerusalem will carry out the distribution in the Southern, Central, Yehuda and Shomron and Jerusalem districts.

The ministry also said that the budget would be given to 200,000 disadvantaged families who meet the criteria. In accordance with the decision of the Ministry of the Interior, the assistance will be transferred automatically to citizens who receive a rebate in the payment of Arnona (property taxes) at a rate of more than 70% and to senior citizens who receive an income support benefit. This is subject to existing data in the collection departments of the local authorities.

The Ministry of the Interior emphasized that even those who are not entitled to a tax rebate can apply for the coupons, and this will be examined by the authorities and under the supervision of the Ministry of the Interior.

The ministry said in a statement that "whoever is found to be eligible subject to the determined income test will receive the tickets retroactively in case he delays their distribution date provided that his application is submitted before the deadline".

The distribution of food stamps will be done using rechargeable food cards, which according to the Ministry of the Interior will be distributed in several beats in the coming months. The value of a ticket for an eligible person will be about NIS 300, and for each additional person, NIS 225 will be added, subject to income tests. The maximum for a household in each of the beats is about NIS 2,400.

The tickets will be available for use at more than 1,500 points of sale "nationwide as widely as possible," which include neighborhood mini-markets, private chains and small businesses selling food.
