Illegal Strike: Workers' Committee is Preventing Sanitation and Garbage Disposal from Beit Shemesh
Tue, Jan 14 2020, 2:00 PM

The Beit Shemesh Workers' Committee (Va'ad) has reportedly gone on a unsanctioned strike today, without the approval of the General Union of Workers (Histadrut), and is illegally preventing cleaning Old Beit Shemesh. Among other things, the committee is preventing workers from sanitation and cleaning to clean some of the city's streets. The committee also will not allow garbage be moved from the city to the regional garbage disposal site, causing a sanitary hazard affecting all residents of the city.

The municipality has put out a complaint that the committee has been preventing the distribution of new garbage bins all over the city for the welfare of the residents in place of the existing bins.

The municipality emphasizes that the Workers' Committee's objections to the municipality hiring contract workers as reinforcements to existing workers are unclear to them. The employment of cleaning and sanitation workers under contract work has been in use by the municipality for years, there has been no new changes to the status quo. Therefore, it is unclear to the municipality's management what the committee is struggling with and why right now.

The municipality is calling on the Workers' Committee to put an immediate stop to the strike and to follow the law. The municipality also emphasizes that they are currently recruiting new employees for the municipality, such as drivers, crane operators, welfare workers and educators, which is done in collaboration with the committee and in line with the needs of the city.

City Manager, Mira Mines,"The improvement of cleanliness and sanitation and residents' health is always the top priority for us and of course that is alongside concern for the dedicated Beit Shemesh Municipality employees. We will continue to do everything to take care of our residents and take care of the cleanliness of the city. We urge the Workers' Committee to negotiate in good faith with us to resolve these problems as soon as possible."
