In today's world Social Media is large part of our everyday life. Following closely behind social media, came social media marketing, which quickly became one of the most important marketing tools within the digital universe. In fact, as of 2019, digital marketing on social media has become an integral part of the marketing mix for almost every business.

Social Media Marketing, also known as Social Media Optimization, is a branch in digital marketing that promotes a product/business in different social networks (Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, Instagram, etc.).
 
What is Social Media?

Social media is an umbrella term for all websites that encourage social interactions between users, especially ones that are related to content, such as uploading photos, writing posts, sharing links, video exposure and more.
The social networks differ in the ways that the users interact and the type of content they share.

Instagram - a platform for users to share and promote pictures and interact with friends, family, celebrities and famous photographers.


YouTube - Youtubers post videosץ Success is measured by the amount and length of views each video receives.  

LinkedIn - social business network which is used to find employment or employees and to  promote business and professional relationships.

Facebook - social network with a wide range of content that includes written posts,  pictures, link/video sharing, comments and more, which produces a variety of measurable interactions that can be monetized.

 
Which Social Network Should You Use to Market Your Business?

As you can see, the variety of content and interactions among the major social networks is very wide and it is a marketing platform with great potential. However, in order to know which platform is suitable for your business and/or product, you need to understand all the social networks and their main users, in order to identify which ones would have your target audience for your business/product.

For example, Linkedin should be your channel if your goal is recruiting employees or to form professional relationships in the high-tech field, but not ideal if you are small business, such as a nutritionist or health coach. For that, Instagram is a great platform, where you can share before and after pictures of clients losing weight in order to  develop interaction with potential and current clients.

On YouTube, which is a social network for video clips, you can upload explanatory videos to your fan-base or to potential customers who haven’t heard about you yet.  On Twitter you will be able to show your existing and potential clients that you are up to date in the world of nutrition by "tweeting" when new research is developed and how it applies to their lives. Finally, on Pinterest, a social network that is a huge bulletin board, you can publish recipes/menus.

In order to successfully manipulate all of the social networks available, you need to familiarize yourself first with the marketing techniques in each of the social networks and their potential for your business.
