Description

Updated on April 2nd, 2020

The Beit Shemesh Municipality and the Moatza Datit published a statement listing the changes being made to Biur chametz (chametz burning) this year, because of the Corona virus.

Because chametz burning will cause gatherings of people, and that is considered Pikuach Nefesh, this year Beit Shemesh residents will send their chametz to be burned by a Shaliach (messenger).

Rav Shlomo Brilant, Head of Community Projects and his team will be the ones collecting chametz from Beit Shemesh residents and they will be the ones to burn the chametz. They will place bins to collect the chametz at these locations and will later burn it themselves. The bins will be placed beginning at 2:00pm on Tuesday, April 7th and will be collected by the municipality on Tuesday, April 7th by 11:59pm.

Residents will drop off one Kazayit of chametz (only!) at the bin located closest to their home. It must be one Kazayit in order to ensure that Rav Shlomo and his team will be able to burn all of the chametz in time.

The bins will be collected by the municipality on Tuesday, April 7th by 11:59pm.

Estimated time of the end of the burning is 11:00am.

Whoever can't leave their home in order to throw the Kazayit of chametz into the bin, can flush one Kazayit of chametz down the toilet. Please note that when you make your chametz Hefker (by saying Kol Chamira) you should have in mind that you are not including the Kazayit that you threw in the bin/flushed down the toilet.

The rest of your chametz should be thrown into the regular garbage bin outside your home by Tuesday, April 7th at 11:59pm. The municipality has committed to picking up the garbage by Wednesday, April 8th (Erev Leil HaSeder) 10:00am.

Chametz that is not in the garbage on time will not be taken out in time. According to the community Rabbanim, you should have in mind that the chametz that you are throwing into the garbage is Hefker and that when you recite Kol Chamira, you should have THIS chametz in mind.
