Description

For the past few months, residents of the G2 Neighborhood have been lobbying and fighting to remove a cellular antenna located at the top of the neighborhood. Contractors and investors have also gottem involved in the fight, fearing a decline in the value of the apartments because of the antenna. The antenna was placed there long before the neighborhood was built and provided reception to people in Ramat Beit Shemesh. The antenna has now been relocated to the future Ramat Bet Shemesh Hei area. What are the risks of a cellular Antenna and who is responsible for them?Cellular antennas exude radiation (non-ionizing).High-level, harmful radiation can cause headaches and fatigue, and in the worst case can be the cause of various serious illnesses. The Ministry of Environmental Protection's (Misrad L'Haganat HaSviva) job in this context is to minimize the exposure of the public to harmful radiation. There is a certain range of radiation that is considered harmless and safe.It should be noted that the standards in Israel allows for a higher exposure to radiation than in Europe, but is still lower than in the US and the UK.However, despite the radiation, antennas cannot be completely removed from city centers, since each antenna has a limited range for transmission and reception. Each cell phone is connected through an antenna that provides reception users nearby. The higher the number of cell phone users in a particular area, the greater the number of antennas required for the supply of reception, so cell phone companies require multiple antennas depending on the number of users and their location in the region.Indeed, the residents of the new neighborhoods in Beit Shemesh are have been suffering from a lack of cellular reception. When fighting for removing a cellular antenna, the effect it has on available reception must be taken into consideration.
