Description

The mental anguish experienced by families who have had their homes broken into is hard to describe; even more so is the panic and fear felt by someone who interrupts the intruder mid-burglary.

Home robbery is unpleasant to say the least, but unfortunately quite a few residents in Beit Shemesh have experienced it. The combination of foreign workers in building projects all over the city, and the fact that many families go away for the weekend, creates a situation where break-ins are an all too frequent occurrence.

Besides for davening, what else can you do to prevent home break-ins?

Shlomo Labell, of CU Security, a home security company which specializes in first-class alarm and security systems, gives us his expert tips for DIY home security.

Outdoors
In many burglaries, the thief enters through an unlocked window or door.
An easy way to prevent break-ins is by making sure all doors and windows in your home are locked. Before going away, check and recheck all openings to make sure everything is properly locked and bolted.
Leave signs of life outside
If you only have one car, ask your neighbor to park their car in your driveway, and have someone regularly empty your mailbox - a full mailbox is a big tip-off for a burglar.
The entrance to your home should be well-lit, so that any intruder would be visible to onlookers, not hidden behind dense foliage or high fences.
Place a security camera in a prominent location - that is sure way to deter a thief and send him on his way to the next home.

Indoors
Make it look like people are living in the house.
Leave lights on or a timer, and do not leave all the blinds closed.
If you have nice neighbors, ask them to come in every day and play around with your blinds, trissim, and lights so that it looks different every day.
Install an alarm system associated with an authorized security center..
Even the most professional thieves will run once they see a sign from a security center - they don’t want to trigger a noisy alarm or alert their call center.

Social
Let your neighbors know about your trip and ask them to keep an eye out on your house.
Leave your phone number with your neighbors so they can call you in case of any trouble
Don’t share your vacation plans or pictures on social media until after you return from your trip.
Two bonuses - you’ll have pictures to show off after you come home and you’ll keep your vacation details from reaching unwanted ears.

Shlomo adds that in addition to all of these useful tips, it’s important to install a security camera and alarm system to ensure complete home protection:

  • An alarm system detects when someone enters the house and sends a message to the company or homeowner that someone has entered your home. Security cameras help you easily determine who has entered, whether it is one of your own children who forgot to disable the system or an intruder, God forbid.
  • When security cameras document a break-in, police are required to come. If it's just the alarm, the police will delay coming out on the pretext that it is just a false alarm.
  • What happens if the thief hears the alarm and escapes the scene of the crime?
With security cameras, it is simple and easy to identify the thief and recover your stolen property.
