Description

During the summer, and sometimes during the transition between seasons, there is an increased danger to the public due to high temperatures and increased humidity- especially when there is a heat wave. When dealing with extreme weather conditions, knowledge is power. Together we can ensure that by staying informed we will all stay safe.

Recommendations for the prevention of heat stroke:

  • The best protection against heat stroke is prevention. Follow weather forecasts and prepare accordingly. In areas that get humid (on the coastline), it is especially important to track humidity in addition to temperature to ensure that you stay safe.
  • Create a cool environment - During the peak hours of the heat it is recommended to stay in a place that has air conditioning. This is the best way to cool the house. It is not necessary to run your air conditioner 24 hours a day, but it is important to do so during peak hours. In places where there is no air conditioning, it is recommended to stay a few hours in an air-conditioned public place, and reduce the length of stay in the heat.
  • Fans can relieve the feeling of heat, but when the temperatures rise above 35° C / 95° F, they are unable to cool the body.
  • In the heat, it is recommended to close blinds or curtains, to reduce the penetration of solar radiation, but to keep the house ventilated. Closed shutters can reduce heat penetration into the apartment by about 80%.
  • Bathing in cool water in the shower or bath helps cool the body.
  • It is advisable to wear light and comfortable clothes.

When going outside

  • Avoid going outside during the hot hours of the day. You should limit your outdoor activities to the early morning or evening hours.
  • In the heat it is advisable to rest. It is recommended to reduce strenuous exercise in hot weather. If you need to exercise, be sure to drink during the activity, and drink 2-4 glasses of cold water more than the daily recommended intake.
  • If you must go outside, be sure to wear a wide-brimmed hat, sunglasses, and light and comfortable clothes, as well as sunscreen. Rest often in a shady place. Exercise and physical effort in heat should be minimized.
  • Warning: Never stay (or leave another person) in a parked car with its windows closed.

Adequate eating and drinking

  • Drink plenty of cold water, try to avoid sugary drinks and drinks that contain caffeine or alcohol.
  • Adults should drink 8-10 glasses of water per day - even without feeling thirsty!
  • Light and balanced meals should be maintained.
  • Warning: If you must limit the amount of water that you drink due to health reasons, please consult with your physician for instructions for heat waves.
