Snake Bites 101

Summer has arrived, and the snakes are out!

There has been a sharp rise in snake sightings over the past couple of weeks in Israel.

The Beit Shemesh area is surrounded by ountains that hold snakes, that sometimes come out and slither through our neighborhoods.

May you never need it but here is a brief guide on what to do in case of a snake bite:

As snake types varies among countries, there are various methods of first aid.

However, most first-aid guidelines include the following:

- Protect the victim and others around him from additional bites
While identifying snake species can be helpful in some areas,, the first priority is preventing additional bites and getting proper medical care.

- Call for help immediately (101) to arrange transportation to the nearest hospital emergency room, so that a serum against the local snake venom can be administered.

- Do not attempt to suck out the venom!

- Keep Calm 
Acute anxiety increases the rate of blood flow and endangers the person.

- Keep the bitten area in a functional position below the person's heart, to minimize blood flow back to the heart and other organs of the body.

- Do not let the person drink anything with alcohol or caffeine.

It is especially important not to allow any alcohol, known as a blood vessel dilator, which will accelerate the absorption of venom. Do not give stimulants or painkillers unless an authorized person has explicitly said so.

- Remove any items or clothing that may constrict the bitten limb in case of swelling (such as: rings, bracelets, watches, shoes, etc.)

- Keep the person as still as possible.

- Do not cut the bitten area.
