Begin Elementary School, a state school specializing in science and multidisciplinary research (Machar), has won the District Education Award. The school is led by principal Bat Sheva Avush.

As part of the selection process, students and staff presented the school's educational, social and values-based programs to representatives of the Ministry of Education, highlighting the school's work and students' progress.

One of the main programs presented was interactive reading. Three times a week, students meet with a teacher in small groups to read a book together. The sessions include discussion and writing activities, with additional practice involving parents. Sixth-grade students also take part by reading with younger pupils, creating a learning partnership between teachers, parents and older students.

The school also runs student teams in jump-rope activities, darbuka drumming and science. These programs are designed to help students develop their skills, build confidence and experience success. According to the principal, all students are welcome to participate. The approach is based on the belief that strengthening students' confidence and sense of ability increases motivation and supports academic progress.

The school also presented data showing an improvement in student performance on the Tanufa assessments.

From a Solar-Powered Bus to 3D Printing

One of the projects that caught the judging panel's attention was a model of a solar-powered bus. The idea came from students who raised concerns about morning traffic congestion and air pollution on the way to school. A survey of the parent community was then conducted and confirmed the need for a transportation solution of this kind.

The project involved preparing engineering drawings, calculating distances, examining whether solar panels could be fitted to the bus roof and considering potential cost savings.

Students worked in the school's Low-Tech and High-Tech learning spaces. In the Low-Tech space, they prepared engineering drawings and practiced cutting materials with various tools. In the High-Tech space, they designed the model using computer software and produced it with a 3D printer.

City Leaders Congratulate the School

Principal Bat Sheva Avush thanked the educational staff, students, parents, parent leadership and the city's Education Administration for their partnership throughout the process. She said the award was a shared achievement for the entire school community.

Beit Shemesh Mayor Shmuel Greenberg congratulated the school, saying: "Congratulations to the school, principal Bat Sheva Avush, the educational staff and the entire Begin school community on this award. Behind this achievement is the daily work of a team that sees each student, builds their confidence and encourages them to learn and progress. The combination of academic achievement and giving every child the opportunity to discover their abilities is a source of pride for all of Beit Shemesh."

Deputy Mayor in charge of Education Itzik Elmaliach added: "Begin School's award is a source of pride for the city and recognition of the dedication of its educational staff. I congratulate principal Bat Sheva Avush, the teachers, students and parents on this shared achievement. We will continue working to strengthen our schools and provide the tools every student needs to progress and reach their potential."

Head of the Education Administration Yossi Goldring said: "The educational work at Begin School combines strengthening students' confidence in their abilities with improving their academic achievement. Through shared reading, participation in student teams and hands-on problem-solving, students are given a range of opportunities to learn, participate and succeed. Congratulations to principal Bat Sheva Avush and the dedicated educational staff on their meaningful work and this well-deserved recognition."
