Beit Shemesh Gets Just 14 Trains a Day as the City Nears 200,000 Residents

Beit Shemesh is approaching 200,000 residents, but according to the data presented in the report, train service in the city has not kept pace with its rapid growth.

The Beit Shemesh train station currently has around 14 departures per day, while other cities with similar or smaller populations have significantly more frequent service.

The numbers

According to an analysis of Israel Railways and Central Bureau of Statistics data for 2026 presented in the report:

  • Beit Shemesh: About 190,000 residents and around 14 trains per day - roughly one train for every 13,500 residents.
  • Modi’in-Maccabim-Re’ut: About 105,000 residents and around 34 trains per day.
  • Nahariya: About 70,000 residents and around 34 trains per day.
  • Hadera: About 108,000 residents and around 45 trains per day.
  • Lod: About 92,000 residents and more than 100 trains per day, partly because it is a major railway junction.

The comparison highlights the large gap between Beit Shemesh’s population and the level of train service available to its residents.

Limited operating hours

The issue is not only the number of trains. train service from Beit Shemesh ends at around 9:49 p.m. The last train back to Beit Shemesh from Tel Aviv is 11 pm.

In other cities, train services ocontinue later into the evening. For commuters and students, this means fewer options and less flexibility throughout the day.

No direct train to Tel Aviv or Jerusalem

The journey from Beit Shemesh to Tel Aviv is also less convenient because there is no direct train. The route passes through Ramla and Lod before continuing toward Tel Aviv, making the journey relatively long compared with traveling by car.

Beit Shemesh also currently has no active direct rail connection to Jerusalem or to Ben Gurion Airport. The former Beit Shemesh–Jerusalem line is no longer operating, while the high-speed Jerusalem railway runs through Ben Gurion Airport without a station in Beit Shemesh.

A growing city with limited rail infrastructure

Beit Shemesh has experienced rapid population growth, with large new neighborhoods being developed and populated at a fast pace.

At the same time, much of the transportation between Beit Shemesh and other parts of the country depends on buses and private vehicles. This creates additional pressure on the roads leading into and out of the city, particularly Routes 38 and 1 during peak hours.

Residents quoted in the report argue that increasing train frequency could encourage more people to use the railway as their main form of transportation. They point out that when the next train is an hour away, even a small delay can make the service much less practical.

An improved station, but not enough trains

The Beit Shemesh railway station has undergone improvements in recent years, including upgrades to its appearance and facilities.

However, residents say that improving the station itself is only part of the solution. They are calling for more frequent trains and expanded operating hours to better match the city’s current size and transportation needs.

Looking ahead

The report calls for a renewed examination of rail service in Beit Shemesh, taking into account not only the city’s growing population but also residents of nearby communities who could benefit from improved access to the station.

More frequent and longer-running train service could give residents better access to employment and education centers, reduce dependence on private cars and buses, and provide a stronger transportation network for a city expected to continue growing rapidly.

The bottom line: Beit Shemesh is growing quickly, but according to the figures presented in the report, its train service has not kept pace. The key question is whether Israel’s rail infrastructure will be expanded to meet the needs of the city’s growing population.
