The District Planning and Building Committee has set a population target of over 500,000 residents for Beit Shemesh
The District Planning and Building Committee in the Jerusalem District has confirmed for discussion that Beit Shemesh is a city with long-term growth potential, up to a population target of over 500,000 people.
This decision constitutes a significant step in recognizing Beit Shemesh as a central urban city in the district. The committee stated in an official document that the city's geographical conditions are suitable for continued development and that it intends to work to promote a comprehensive planning policy document for the city.
The committee is now publishing the relevant documents and will hold detailed discussions to approve the full policy plan, which will define the directions of urban development and outline the national and district planning plans for the coming years.
Mayor Shmuel Greenberg said "This is a historic recognition of the status of Beit Shemesh. Setting the strategic target of over half a million residents will allow us to plan in advance future neighborhoods that will integrate educational institutions, public institutions, modern infrastructure and adapted public transportation. Beit Shemesh is becoming a city where everyone can see their future."
Deputy Mayor and Chairman of the Local Committee for the Development of the City Shimon Goldberg said "The District Committee today determined clearly and unequivocally: Beit Shemesh is the city of the future of the Jerusalem District. Setting a target of over half a million residents is a tremendous declaration of trust in the city and its residents. This is a strategic decision of the highest order for Beit Shemesh in recent years. Its meaning is to ensure the momentum of development, expand the supply of housing and employment, and upgrade the infrastructure, alongside responsible planning that will ensure a high quality of life for future generations."
