Do you have an old metal box or album filled with vintage Israeli coins tucked away in your parents' or grandparents' attic? While most old coins carry mostly sentimental value, every now and then, a rare treasure is hidden among them.
A recent public auction sparked excitement among coin collectors after an ultra-rare 1-agora coin from 1960 (Tav-Shin-Kaf) was sold for an astonishing sum of over 100,000 NIS!
The secret behind its price tag? A tiny prototype design error. Instead of 10 grains on the left wheat stalk as requested by the Bank of Israel, British engravers accidentally minted only 8 grains.
Only about ten copies of this rare prototype are known to exist worldwide. While standard vintage coins are worth very little today, this story is a great reminder that value comes down to tiny details. Before you clear out those old family keepsakes, grab a magnifying glass and check the wheat stalks!
