Is your Safe Room (Mamad) Stocked with Essentials?

Make sure you and your family members know what to do when an alert is received wherever you are: at home, in the car, on public transport or outdoors, and that our protected space is ready for use and stocked with the necessary equipment.

Be sure to read the instructions: What to Do When you Hear the Siren

It is important to prepare the necessary equipment ahead of time, which will help us and our family members to deal with the emergency situation. The following items should be in the safe room:

  • Water and food for the entire household, for at least 3 days

  • Emergency lighting

  • Flashlight and batteries

  • First aid kit

  • Medicine and printed prescriptions

  • Radio and batteries

  • Portable charges for the mobile device

  • Special food for family members (babies, elderly, animals, etc)

  • Backup batteries for essential equipment such as medical devices

  • Photocopy of essential documents such as ID card, driver's license, passport, etc.

  • Fire extinguisher and smoke detector

  • At least half a tank of fuel in the car

  • Activities for children such as games, books and arts/crafts

~ Make sure the shelter is cleared of all items that are not essential for staying in it during an emergency.

~ Remove heavy or dangerous items and devices attached to the walls, including shelving, mirrors, etc.

~ Make sure that the shelter door can open and close properly. First try WD40!

~ If you need help with the Mamad window or door, you can call the Yedidim Organization. Remember, the steel window must be closed and bolted to be protective during an attack.  Call 1230.

~ Check that the lighting around the shelter is in good condition. If there is no lighting or it is not working properly, electrical work must be done to fix the lighting.

If you share a shelter with other building residents, check that it is unlocked and ready for use. For any issues related to a Mamad or Miklat, call Yedidim or your city right away!

  • Make sure that the access routes from all apartments to the shelter, as well the routes from emergency exits to an open space, are cleared and free of obstacles.
  • Hang a sign by the shelter entrance, listing the contact information of all shelter key holders (names and phone numbers).

Shelter use during emergencies – key points:
~  Lock the door and window (escape hatch) by turning the handle 90 degrees.
~  Close the air vents.
~  If there is an air ventilation and filtration system, it may be set to ventilation mode.
~  If an air conditioner is installed in the shelter, it may be turned on.
