Earlier this week, International Sunscreen Day was observed, and Israel's Ministry of Health (Misrad HaBriut) released an important reminder for the upcoming summer months: When it comes to sun exposure, a "safe tan" does not exist.
As the temperatures heat up, it’s vital to understand exactly how different summer products affect your skin.
Tanning Oils WITH SPF: These do not provide full protection against harmful UV radiation, nor do they prevent skin cancer. Using them does not mean you can safely stay out in the sun for prolonged periods.
Tanning Oils WITHOUT SPF: These offer zero UV protection. Worse, they actually magnify the intensity of the sun's radiation, accelerating severe skin damage.
Self-Tanning/Bronzing Products: While self-tanners are a great way to get a sun-kissed look without sun exposure, they do not contain UV filters. If you use them, you must still apply standard sunscreen before going outside.
Skipping out on proper sun protection can lead to immediate and long-term health complications, including:
Sunburns, severe skin irritation, and acute allergic reactions.
Dehydration and irreversible eye damage.
Premature skin aging, dark spots, and deep wrinkles.
Skin cancer, including deadly Melanoma.
Misrad HaBriut recommends adopting these four essential sun-safety habits:
Skip the Tanning Accelerators: Avoid any products explicitly designed to encourage or deepen a tan.
Watch the Clock: Avoid direct sun exposure during peak radiation hours, between 10:00 AM and 4:00 PM.
Upgrade Your SPF: Always use a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30.
Reapply Routinely: Reapply your sunscreen every two hours, and immediately after swimming or heavy sweating.
The Bottom Line: A tan is temporary. Sun damage can last a lifetime. Protect your skin this summer!
