Beit Shemesh is Launching the "Accelerator" Project: An Advanced Transport Plan with a Budget of Approximately 1 Billion Shekels
On Monday, Beit Shemesh Mayor Shmuel Greenberg met with Transport Minister Miri Regev to finalize one of the most important projects for the city’s transport future – the "Accelerator" project. The project, which is set to be a significant investment of about 1 billion shekels, aims to upgrade the city’s transport network, make it more efficient and accessible, and improve the quality of life for residents.
As part of the project, bus lanes will be built, new bike paths will be paved, smart traffic lights and roundabouts will be built, and street signs and municipal signs will be upgraded. In addition, new, advanced bus stops will be built with real-time information displays, full accessibility, and innovative technologies to enhance the travel experience.
Benny Levinstein, the city's public transportation coordinator, said that the first phase of the project will begin on Nahar HaYarden Street, where a 2.5 km-long bus lane will be created, with work expected to start in March2025. As part of this process, a comprehensive public information campaign will be conducted for the residents.
"Prioritizing public transportation is the best solution for reducing traffic congestion, decreasing air pollution and noise, and improving the quality of life in the city," explains Tamar Bar-Shai, head of the traffic and transportation department at Beit Shemesh Municipality.
Beit Shemesh Mayor Shmuel Greenberg said "The residents of Beit Shemesh can take pride in a project that will transform the city's transportation. This is the beginning of a transportation revolution that will place our city at the forefront of the national map. I thank the head of the Likud faction in Beit Shemesh, Shalom Edri, who was instrumental in securing the necessary budgets and coordination with the Transport Ministry, as well as the city's transport portfolio holder, Avraham Frankel."
City Engineer Guy Donenfeld said "A project of this scale requires meticulous planning and exceptional cooperation between the city's professional teams and the Transport Ministry.... The 'Accelerator' project is not just a transport upgrade, but also a statement about the future of Beit Shemesh: A city that promotes sustainability, accessibility, and improving the quality of life for all its residents".
