Beit Shemesh Launches Innovative Program to Strengthen Ethiopian Family Units
Beit Shemesh has been selected as one of ten Israeli municipalities to implement a groundbreaking initiative focused on family stability and conflict prevention within the Ethiopian community. Led locally by Kes Rahamim Tsegai, the program bridges traditional Ethiopian leadership with modern professional tools.
Recognizing the unique cultural shifts and familial tensions that can arise during integration, the program restores the vital role of the Kesim and Shmageluch - the community’s traditional spiritual and social leaders. By combining their ancestral wisdom with contemporary conflict-resolution strategies, the city offers a culturally sensitive support system.
This activity is part of a municipal policy that sees the importance of strengthening community resilience and providing tailored responses to diverse populations in the city.
Operated by the Iriyah's Community Department in partnership with the Ministry of Aliyah and Integration and the National Council of Ethiopian Priests, the initiative includes workshops, lectures, and personal guidance. Gashao Masla, Director of Social and Community Partnerships, noted "This is about more than just services; it’s about connection to identity. We are merging the wisdom of the past with the tools of the future to ensure every family has the support they need to thrive.”
