Description

The Airports Authority has announced that it is working to go digital in 2023 - a move that is expected to shorten the long lines for check-in and eliminate the initial security check.

More than 10 million travelers have experienced long lines waiting to check-in for flights since the start of this year. Now the Airports Authority has announced that it is working to introduce digital check-in. The aim is "to shorten waiting periods and improve passengers' experience."

According to the Airports Authority, digitization at the airport will make it possible to manage departures abroad through self-service desks. The Airports Authority CEO, Hagai Topolansky, has allocated over NIS 50 million to the digital conversion project. The Authority will launch new self-service kiosks, an investment of over NIS 2 million in the first phase - where passengers will be able to weigh their luggage, pay for excess weight as needed and print the tag and stickers for the luggage. The luggage tag will be scanned near the conveyor-belts and and from there the cases will be sent directly to the plane.

Over 50% of passengers currently choose to check in online. So, with the addition of the self check-in desks passengers will go to the security check only after check-in. The Airports Authority expects that this year 18 million passengers will pass through the airport and that next year the numbers are expected to increase to 24 million passengers. By switching to the digital processes, times and queues will be shortened for everyone. The digital check-ins will be an excellent solution for the current shortage of staff that the airport is dealing with.

Meanwhile there are still long lines for travelers at the airport, but you can check the waiting times on this website, built by Tzachi Zilberstein: https://tlv-busy.web.app/. The site, which is only in Hebrew, forecasts for 72 ahead how busy the arrivals hall, check-in, and security checks in Terminal 1 and Terminal 3 are likely to be under five ratings: deserted, light, medium, heavy, and peak.
