A court-approved settlement was reached in a lawsuit filed by the Ministry of Justice’s Commission for Equal Rights of Persons with Disabilities against the Yohananof supermarket chain over violations of the rights of people with disabilities.
In March 2025, the Commission filed a lawsuit against the chain following complaints about the failure to grant priority in line to customers with disabilities, as well as additional violations of the Equal Rights of Persons with Disabilities Law and the Service Accessibility Regulations. The lawsuit was filed after an examination by the Commission revealed significant deficiencies in the provision of accessible service, including failure to conduct required employee training on accessible service, shortcomings in implementing accessibility procedures, and incomplete compliance with the regulations under the law.
During the court hearing, the complainants appeared and shared their personal stories. On the court’s recommendation, the parties reached a settlement agreement, which was approved and granted the status of a court judgment. Under the agreement, the Yohananof chain will improve and update its accessibility and service procedures, conduct dedicated and comprehensive training for its employees on accessible service and the rights of people with disabilities, and compensate each of the four complainants in the amount of NIS 25,000, a total of NIS 100,000, and will also pay the Commission legal expenses in the amount of NIS 10,000.
The total amount awarded under the judgment is NIS 110,000.
Dan Rashel, Commissioner for Equal Rights of Persons with Disabilities, said “The right to priority in line is an integral part of the right to accessible, equal, and respectful service. Violating this right harms the dignity of people with disabilities and is not a marginal issue. This judgment sends a clear message: Those who violate the Equal Rights of Persons with Disabilities Law will bear the consequences.”
Today, approximately 1.7 million people with disabilities live in Israel, about 18% of the population. Since the outbreak of the “Iron Swords” war, approximately 100,000 people with disabilities have been added.
