Test runs are starting on the new Green Line - L3 of the Jerusalem light rail. The runs are conducted for checking systems and quality control, and they take place around the clock. During the runs, the train will not carry passengers, but this is a significant step towards opening the line to the general public.

Jerusalem's Green Line is opening in stages, with the first section from Malcha to HaTurim expected to start service in May 2026.

The full Green Line, connecting Gilo to the Hebrew University, is projected to fully open in stages between 2027-2028, significantly expanding Jerusalem's light rail network. See the maps above.

Key Opening Details:

  • First Section (L3): Malcha (Sports Complex) to HaTurim (Yitzhak Moda'i) – Expected May 2026. (Test runs started already)
  • Full Network: The entire Green Line (L3, L4, L5) is planned for phased operation, linking areas like Gilo, French Hill, Givat Ram, and the Hebrew University campuses by 2027-2028, as stated by the Jerusalem Municipality and transport plans.

What to Expect:

  • New Connections: The Green Line will serve Gilo, Malcha, Givat Mordechai, Givat Ram, French Hill, and the Hebrew University.
  • Network Expansion: Track integration with the existing Red Line. Increasing daily passenger capacity significantly.
  • Construction Impact: Expect some disruptions to existing bus routes and traffic flow as track connections are made, with mitigation plans in place.
  • Ease traffic congestion in the city. The new line offers a green, convenient and fast alternative to private vehicles.
