Therapeutic Riding at Moshe's Ranch!

The powerful impact of horses in emotional empowerment…

Eight-year-old Yair hardly spoke. He was withdrawn, avoided playing with friends at school, and was quiet even at home. “It was heartbreaking to see him like that,” says his mother, Dana. After trying various treatments, Dana decided to explore a new direction: therapeutic horseback riding. Three months later, Yair was not only riding confidently but also began sharing and smiling - something they hadn’t seen from him in a long time.

Therapeutic horseback riding isn’t just an activity with horses; it’s a powerful tool that helps children face emotional and physical challenges in exceptional ways.

What makes a horse the ideal partner in empowerment?
Horses are impressive and highly sensitive animals, capable of connecting deeply with people. “Horses have an extraordinary ability to recognize our body language and emotions,” explains Moshe Karpol, director of the Emotional Empowerment Center at Moshe's Ranch. “They act as a mirror - the child learns through them what works and what doesn’t, and discovers inner strengths they didn’t know they had.”

A child lacking confidence learns how to develop a strong and calm presence. Horses don’t respond to physical strength but to determination and calmness. This teaches children that they can lead and make an impact, even if they aren’t the strongest in their class.

How does therapeutic horseback riding help children?
Therapeutic horseback riding combines physical activity with emotional reinforcement. Children learn the following skills:

  • Leadership and assertiveness: A child leading a horse learns how to set positive boundaries and lead without force.
  • Improved self-confidence: Small successes, like leading a horse or getting it to perform a task, enhance the child’s sense of self-worth.
  • Emotional regulation: Through the horse’s behavior, children learn how their emotions affect their surroundings and how to adjust their responses accordingly.

Reimbursements are available from some Kupot Cholim.

Success stories – How horses changed children's lives:
Moti, a 10-year-old boy, was quiet and introverted. When he arrived at the ranch, he struggled to communicate with and lead the horse. Over the sessions, Moti learned how to project confidence and guide the horse assertively. “Suddenly, he started standing up for himself in life too,” his mother shares.

Michal, an 8-year-old girl, was afraid to try new things. During her first session, she couldn’t even get on the horse. But over time, she overcame her fear and built a sense of confidence. Today, Michal initiates activities on her own and feels confident in her abilities.

Why horses?
Unlike humans, a horse doesn’t judge or criticize - it simply reacts. This allows children to explore their inner world in a safe and supportive environment.
