The Nine Days begin with Rosh Chodesh Av and come to an end on the evening of Tisha B'Av. However, since the Beit Hamikdash was actually destroyed on the 10th of Av, Ashkenazi custom is for many of the restrictions observed during the Nine Days to remain in effect until chatzot (midday) on the following day.
This year, however, Tisha B'Av falls on a Thursday, which creates a unique situation. Because Friday is dedicated to preparing for Shabbat, many of the usual post-fast restrictions are relaxed or do not apply, allowing people to honor Shabbat properly. At the same time, not every restriction is treated the same way, and there are a number of different halachic opinions and longstanding customs regarding exactly which practices continue into Thursday night and Friday, and when they officially come to an end.
As with many areas of Halachah, family and community customs play an important role.
If you have an established family minhag or follow the guidance of your rav, you should continue to do so. Otherwise, the guide below provides a practical overview of the most widely accepted customs to help you navigate Thursday night and Friday after this year's Tisha B'Av.
