Rav Avraham Kop, head of Ezrat Achim, urges people to be super-vigilant as they prepare for Pesach, emphasizing the need to prevent accidents, particularly those involving toxic products.
Each year, Ezrat Achim deals with numerous cases of poisoning and burns resulting from unsafe handling or storage of cleaning supplies used during Pesach preparations. Despite not always making headlines, these incidents can lead to serious injuries and long-term consequences.
Data from the Health Ministry and the National Poison Information Center at Rambam Medical Center highlight the alarming trend of increased emergency visits, especially among children, in the week leading up to Pesach. Common culprits include household cleaners like bleach, soap, and degreasers, as well as medications left within reach of children during spring cleaning.
Ezrat Achim recommends the following precautionary measures, aligned with Health Ministry guidelines:
- Securely store household cleaners in inaccessible cupboards.
- Keep detergents in their original packaging to avoid confusion.
- Store disinfectants out of children's reach and prevent them from handling such products.
- Adhere strictly to product instructions and avoid mixing chemicals.
- Safeguard medications away from children's access and administer them correctly.
- In case of suspected poisoning, refrain from inducing vomiting and seek immediate medical assistance.
For non-life-threatening burns, contact Ezrat Achim's burn clinic at 02-999-000 Ext 3 for expert guidance.
