In recent weeks, reports have surfaced about counterfeit bills, mainly 100 ₪ notes, affecting businesses and customers in several cities across Israel, including Ashdod, Haifa, and Bnei Brak. Some of these high-quality fake bills are difficult to spot, and both businesses and everyday customers may accidentally receive them.
The police warn that professional crime groups may be involved, though no arrests have been made in most cases. Residents are advised to remain vigilant when receiving cash, even notes that were previously considered safe.
Tips for spotting counterfeit bills:
Check the built-in security features, such as thin security threads, watermarks, and transparent marks.
Feel the texture of the paper – counterfeit bills often feel unusually smooth or different from real notes.
Observe the colors and printing – blurred colors or minor printing inaccuracies can indicate a fake.
The Bank of Israel emphasizes that any counterfeit bill that is detected will not be replaced, so the loss falls on the holder. Residents are encouraged to inspect notes carefully and report suspicious bills to the authorities immediately.
