Ministry of Health Issues Heatwave Warning: Stay Indoors, Stay Hydrated

The Ministry of Health is urging the public to avoid being outdoors and to limit exposure to heat and direct sunlight as much as possible. It is important to drink water frequently, regardless of activity level, and to stay in air-conditioned environments whenever possible. Avoid unnecessary physical exertion.

The Ministry specifically advises elderly individuals and those with chronic illnesses to refrain from going outside during these extreme heat days.

When spending any time outdoors, it is recommended to:

  • Wear a wide-brimmed hat

  • Dress in light, breathable clothing

  • Apply sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30

The Ministry also reminds the public never to leave babies, children, the elderly, people with disabilities, or pets unattended in vehicles. Pets should not be left outdoors or in uncooled structures without access to water and a reasonable temperature.

During extreme heat, there is a risk of developing heat-related illnesses, such as heatstroke, which occurs when the body is unable to cool itself. The risk is higher among:

  • Older adults

  • Children ages 0–4

  • Pregnant women

  • People with heart or respiratory diseases

  • Individuals with obesity

  • Those taking certain medications

  • People suffering from acute illness or dehydration

Warning signs of heatstroke include:

  • Body temperature above 39.5°C (103°F)

  • Red, hot, and dry skin (no sweating)

  • Rapid heartbeat

  • Severe headache (or sensation of pounding in the head)

  • Dizziness, nausea, abdominal pain, vomiting

  • Confusion or loss of consciousness

In such cases, call emergency services immediately. While waiting for help, move the affected person to a shady, cool area and begin cooling the body. Important: Do not give the person anything to drink. Fluid replacement must be administered by medical professionals.
