IDF to launch new technology for emergencies
The IDF Home Front Command has completed trials with a new system to send location-based public warning messages, and it is now operational.
The new system is based on Cell Broadcast, which is a method of sending short messages to multiple phone users in a defined area. Many other countries have similar systems in place.
The message is set to reach mobile phones directly, without the need for any action on the part of the user. They don't have to load a special application on the phone.
You can see how it work here: https://youtu.be/X3Q8tZLpfJo Please note that you will hear the sound of a siren.
When the "Cell Broadcast" technology is activated, all mobile phone users in the threatened area will receive an alert via a text message sent directly to their mobile devices, accompanied by a dedicated warning sound.
In case of receiving an alert, follow Home Front Command’s instructions. These instructions can save lives.
The new technology for delivering life-saving instructions via mobile phones uses Cell Broadcast (CB) transmission, based on transmission through cellular antennas to your mobile device.
The system operates even without internet access and is not affected by traffic, only requiring minimal cellular reception. This is part of the aim to provide warnings to everyone, anytime, anywhere.
When a "Cell Broadcast" alert is activated, all mobile phone users in the threatened area will receive an emergency alert from Home Front Command, transmitted directly to the cellular antenna in your area. Everyone in that vicinity will receive the emergency message directly to their mobile phones. The message will break into the mobile phone with a sound and a warning sign icon (depending on the cellular provider), along with text from Home Front Command that appears on the mobile screen, including event details and life-saving instructions on what actions to take.
It is important to note that when using this technology, the message is broadcast to all devices in a specific geographical area.
Which devices can receive emergency messages? Most smartphones imported into the country support the new capability, thanks to international standards requiring emergency message alerts on mobile devices.
The technology is intended for use in the context of large-scale emergencies that occur , and is subject to the operational consideration of the Home Front Command. It is not a substitute for the Home Front Command application or the local sirens.
The new technology was unveiled amid the heightened tensions in the Middle East following the assassinations last week of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran and Hezbollah commander Fuad Shukr in Beirut.
It is advisable to spend some time on the Home Front website in English, to ensure that you and your family are ready for any emergency. https://www.oref.org.il/eng
