Do you think that 'Vegan' or 'Parve' labels mean a product is safe for milk allergies? Think again.
The Ministry of Health have shared this warning:
Recently, new food products have entered the market containing the protein Beta-lactoglobulin, or BLG. This protein is not produced from cows, which is why these products are often labeled as 'Parev' or 'Vegan.'
But it’s important to understand something: from an allergy perspective, this is the same milk protein. Therefore, it can cause a severe allergic reaction in people who are allergic to milk."
It’s vital to realize that a 'Parev' or 'Vegan' label does not mean the product is safe for those with allergies. How do you check? Only through the ingredient list.
Read the full list and look for an explicit mention of the word 'Milk' or 'Milk Protein.' And another important point: Lactose intolerance is not the same as a milk allergy. Even if there is no lactose, the milk protein may still be present and can endanger those with allergies."
If you are allergic or preparing food for someone who is, don't rely on the front-of-pack titles. Always check the ingredient list - it could save a life.
