Beware of a WhatsApp scam that is causing serious problems. It is not new, but it is worthwhile to be aware of it.
You may get a WhatsApp message from a contact, such as a friend, parent or child asking you to send them a 6-digit code that was sent to you by accident.
At that very moment, you get a message from WhatsApp with a 6-digit code - it all looks legitimate. But WAIT - don't answer the message, it's a scam! If you send the code, you give the scammer access to your WhatsApp account, including chat history and sensitive information such as credit card and bank information.
Once they have access to your account, the scammer can then send messages to all your contacts and the scam continues.
If this happens to you, end the conversation at once. It's almost certain that the friend messaging you has already been hacked. The scam works because WhatsApp won't let a new device access an account unless it's been verified via that randomly generated six-digit code. It's these numbers the hackers need in order to access your WhatsApp account.
If you get any message from a contact that looks odd or suspicious, you should check by calling that person and asking them if they really sent you a message.
Be aware, be careful!
