After the Corona lockdowns, when there was a backlog of people needing passports, emergency passports were issued on the spot to those who needed them, and, to reduce future backlog, they were issued as valid for two years instead of one.

Now the backlog is gone, and the rules are reverting to how they were pre-Corona.  Here’s what you need to know:

• Any emergency passport issued under the Corona rules will expire on the date printed on the passport, it will not expire on September 1st if it has been more than a year since it was issued.
• All new emergency passports issued after September 1st will expire after one year.
• Citizens who are applying for an emergency passport must complete the process for a long-term biometric passport at the same time.
• Emergency passports will only be issued to those who fit one or more of the criteria listed here.
• If you have tickets to travel within the next 48 hours and need an emergency passport, you must go to the office at Ben Gurion airport where you will be issued an emergency passport on the spot.
• If you have tickets to travel more than 48 hours from the present time, you must make an appointment to go to one of the emergency passport offices, and your passport will be sent to you up to a week after the appointment.
• The emergency passport offices are located in Eliat, Ashdod, Be’er Sheva, Bnei Brak, Haifa, Jerusalem, East Jerusalem, Kfar Saba, Nof HaGalil, Netanya, Afula, Petach Tikva, Tzfat, Krayot, Rishon LeTziyon, Ramla, and Tel Aviv

Please note that these rules only pertain to emergency Israeli passports. Dual citizens may still travel on an expired Israeli passport and a valid foreign passport until the end of 2023.
